Presented at the Sport & EU 2022 Annual conference (https://www.sportandeu.com/2022-conference) and at the Sports, Politics, Society Symposium in Doha (https://www.dohainstitute.org), the World Sports Power Index (WSPI) aims to rank the effect of sports on the countries' soft power. Nations are increasingly using sports as a tool to shine on the international scene. The existing soft power indexes were not able to measure accurately the impact that sport has on a country’s soft power.
The WSPI takes into account 3 variables, which are the performance of national teams (WRCES), the global media popularity of countries professional sports leagues and the hosting of major sports events. With a precise measurement of sport power, the WSPI can lead to more accurate and holistic soft power rankings, which at their turn will give sport a proper weighting in governmental policies targeting international diplomacy.
